A recent study claims that 60% of credit-card holders carry a significant balance, and of those who own a credit card, the average balance is now over $8,000, while only a decade ago it was around $3,000!
So for over half of US credit card holders, the ongoing APR is perhaps the most important feature of a credit card. But what is an ongoing APR? A.P.R. stands for Annual Percentage Rate, and the lower the better! A lower APR card means you pay less interest on your credit card balance at the closing of each statement period if you carry a balance. Ongoing APR is the APR after your introductory period, which usually varies from 6-18 months. The "intro" APR is always lower than the "ongoing" APR (often 0%) and it can be applied toward your balance transfers from another credit card, or toward purchases made during the introductory period, or toward both. APRs can either be "fixed" or "variable." Fixed-rate APR's are typically higher, but you know years in advance how much interest you'll have to pay at the end of each month. A variable rate will change (vary) based on the "prime" index, published in the Wall Street Journal.
